Why Your Team Sucks 2014: Cleveland Browns

Some people are fans of the Cleveland Browns. But many, many more people are NOT fans of the Cleveland Browns. This 2014 Deadspin NFL team preview is for those in the latter group.
Your team: (sigh)
Your 2013 record: 4-12. And you know what? Things didn't start off THAT bad last season for Cleveland. They kicked Brandon Weeden to the curb after two weeks in favor of Brian Hoyer, who played really well in two consecutive victories. They traded Trent Richardson, a move that now looks monumentally shrewd, given that Trent Richardson is terrible (without that pick, the Browns would not have been able to draft Weeden's successor). Rob Chudzinski looked mildly competent (even though the team's first choice, Chip Kelly, spurned them, which will become a running theme …

Tiger Woods Wins First PGA Tour Event Since 2009 [UPDATE]

Tiger Woods began the day at Bay Hill 11-under par with a one stroke lead over Graeme McDowell. He finished the day five strokes ahead of McDowell and won the Arnold Palmer Invitational with a 13-under par performance. It was not all puppy dogs and ice cream cones for Tiger, though. According to Jason Sobel of the Golf Channel, via Twitter: Tiger didn't receive the customary hug and handshake from Arnold Palmer on final green. There's a reason. Still efforting the full story. Update 6:54 p.m.: Sobel is reporting that rumors on the course suggest Palmer was taken to the hospital with high blood pressure. Update 8:36 p.m.: Palmer will remain in the hospital overnight. " Nobody is overly concerned about the prognosis." …

Brandon Jacobs Pays Back Six-Year-Old Who Mailed $3.36 From His Piggy Bank

When we last heard from six-year-old Joe Armento, he had unsuccessfully attempted to persuade running back Brandon Jacobs, who had just signed as a free agent with the San Francisco 49ers, to stay put in New York. More precisely, he tried to lure him back by enclosing in the envelope $3.36 from his piggy bank. We hear that's like $1.4 million to a six-year-old, but Jacobs can make up to $2 million this season if he hits certain incentives. Still, Jacobs tweeted out the letter (sent by Joe's mom) and the cold, cold heart of the blogosphere was temporarily thawed. In a follow-up phone call to Joe's mother, Jacobs expressed how much he appreciated the letter and said that he would soon be back in New Jersey to pack up his stuff before heading out west for good and that he …

World Series of the 2010s, Ranked

data-mm-id=”_bgr82rdua”>Ready to feel old? Wednesday night's World Series was the last professional championship in the four major North American sports leagues that we'll see in the 2010s. Thus, get ready to see plenty of "end of the decade" lists by the time we get to New Year's Eve. Take a stroll down memory lane with us, as we count down the best Fall Classics of the 10s…10. 2010 (Giants over Rangers 4-1)A decade of excitement really started off with a bit of a thud. San Francisco's even-year dominance began in a five-game set that was over rather quickly. While we got to see a rookie Madison Bumgarner work his magic in Game 4 (8.0 IP, no runs, three hits in a 4-0 win), none of the other games were particularly in doubt, save for the 3-1 finale in Ar…

Wait, Are the Redskins Going to Be Good Next Year?

data-mm-id=”_53mgh0x5f”>The Redskins have long been in the running for the most embarrassing, putrid, and poorly-run franchise in sports. While that reputation will take years, maybe decades, to change from a football perspective, the team is now seemingly on the right track. The Redskins have started their offseason by hiring Ron Rivera as the head coach, and are looking to add Jack Del Rio with him on the coaching staff. In addition, Rivera's new squad is set to draft second overall in 2020. Drafting second this year doesn't come with much suspense. Barring a monumental shock, it will be Ohio State's Chase Young. Even as a rookie, it's expected Young will instantly wreck offensives. Young will not be an average highly-drafted rookie asked to make an impact. He&#…

Melvin Gordon Just Inadvertently Made the Argument Against Paying Running Backs Big Money

data-mm-id=”_56z3ou9l5″>Melvin Gordon has a fairly large chip on his shoulder heading into the 2020 NFL season. The 26-year-old running back signed with the Denver Broncos and he has a lot to prove in 2020. Unfortunately, he actually made a great case against investing money into the running back position during a recent interview. When asked about having a chip on his shoulder, Gordon agreed and said the following:More from @Melvingordon25, on the chip on his shoulder: pic.twitter.com/egfNHNAOYK— Nicki Jhabvala (@NickiJhabvala) March 27, 2020So, what you're telling me is that without an offensive line, there's no reason to invest in a running back? This argument is really not a great one from the two-time Pro Bowler. If anything, it shows that teams should prioritize payin…

Please Join Me in Overreacting to Bol Bol's Scrimmage Performance

data-mm-id=”_qazqow00t”>Basketball was on television today. Yes, real basketball! The NBA kicked off a slew of scrimmages today with the Los Angeles Clippers taking on the Orlando Magic on Wednesday afternoon. Meanwhile, in a court next door, the Denver Nuggets took on the Washington Wizards with this hilarious starting five. Omfg pic.twitter.com/wGeLcX1gxK— John Hollinger (@johnhollinger) July 22, 2020As you can see, Bol Bol started in what amounted to his first-ever NBA "game." Bol was in the midst of rehab when the 2019-20 season started and played well in the G League, but never saw a minute in any of the Nuggets' regular-season games before the season was postponed. For the most part, this is the first time a larger audience has watched Bol play basketball since h…

Jim Harbaugh: Sports Won't Make COVID-19 Situation Worse

data-mm-id=”_6n8xmwaxh”>America continues to trudge ahead with life despite COVID-19 ravaging the country. The college football community is going about its business as usual, waiting for August to come so practices and games can start up. Given the circumstances are, in fact, getting worse rather than better, the contingency plan to push the season back to spring may become less of a last resort and more of an only option over the next four weeks. Jim Harbaugh gave his thoughts on the pandemic to reporters today. He believes the season will move forward because no experts believe sports will aggravate the current state of things to the point that having sports is unadvisable. Jim Harbaugh, on moving forward with plans for fall football season: "COVID is part of our society. It wa…

Lamar Jackson Rebuffs Louis Riddick's Question About Incorporating Pieces of Patrick Mahomes' Game

data-mm-id=”_qsx85japu”>An age-old journalist trick when conducting interviews is to throw a few softball questions to the subject early in the conversation to loosen things up and elicit an easy answer. It appears ESPN NFL analyst Louis Riddick tried to employ this technique during his conversation with Lamar Jackson and was quickly rejected.During Riddick's interview with the defending NFL MVP ahead of tonight's Monday Night Football showdown against the Chiefs, Riddick asked Jackson the following in relation to Patrick Mahomes: “”When you watch his game, and when quarterbacks watch one another, are there certain things that you really like about his game that you go, I need to try and do a little bit of that? There has to be some of that right? You guys kind of take from o…
